In order for a company to comply with maternity protection conditions, women must inform the employer of their pregnancy and the expected date of delivery as early as possible. Only then will comprehensive prohibitions on dismissal take effect to protect the expectant mother.

To protect the mother and child in the workplace, employers are also required to adequately protect their pregnant or breastfeeding employees and their child from hazards to life and health. An overview of relevant hazards is provided in the risk assessment template from the Occupational Safety Department. Among other things, night work between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., work on Sundays and public holidays, or overtime in any form is prohibited during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

In order to secure the employee’s income during her employment ban in the protection periods, the employer is obliged to provide a supplementary benefit to the maternity allowance.

For the implementation of maternity protection within the University and the University Hospital, please refer to the individual regulations for the respective department. The Personnel Handbook also provides you with important information on further internal procedures during maternity leave at the University and University Hospital.

For further information and advice, please contact the Occupational Safety Department. The consultation will be confidential upon request.
