Maternity leave

The Maternity Protection Act provides a comprehensive set of guidelines for employers and employees to protect expectant mothers. In addition, female students are included in the scope of application of the Maternity Protection Act if the training institution specifies the place, time and procedure of the training event as mandatory or female students complete a mandatory internship as part of their university education.

In order for the university and the university hospital to be able to comply with the maternity protection requirements, women should announce their pregnancy and the expected date of delivery at the appropriate place as early as possible.

This is because protective measures for pregnant women and nursing mothers must be taken immediately to rule out any risk to mother and child. Even the first three months of pregnancy are crucial for this. Therefore, please report your pregnancy or that you are breastfeeding promptly to the office responsible for you.

Pregnant or breastfeeding employees should contact their supervisor who will conduct the risk assessment. Students contact the IBZ (general student counseling) as noted below.

In any case, the Family Service serves as your first point of contact in advance. The Family Service provides confidential and comprehensive advice on maternity protection and all other issues concerning the compatibility of work, science, studies and family.

Here you will find an initial overview of the regulations on maternity protection and parental leave at FAU.
