Child allowance

Child allowance

General:

You are entitled to child allowance as soon as a child is born.

Child allowance is paid by the state, it does not depend on your income and is tax-free.

Families receive €250 per child.

Generally speaking, child allowance is paid until the child turns 18.

Special rules:

For children who are still completing vocational training or studying (including in preparation for a doctoral degree), child allowance can be paid until the child turns 25. For children with a disability, it is irrelevant whether or not they are studying or completing training.

Applying for child allowance:

After a change of rules introduced in 2023, all staff should apply for child allowance from the family benefits office at the Federal Employment Agency (Familienkasse der Agentur für Arbeit). Application forms are available for downloading.
