Bavarian family allowance/daycare allowance

Bavarian family allowance/daycare allowance

The Bavarian Family Allowance Act (Familiengeldgesetz) came into effect on August 1, 2018. The family allowance (Familiengeld) has been paid to parents since September 2018.

The family allowance is available to parents whose children are one or two years old. The family allowance takes the place of the previously available allowances known as Betreuungsgeld and Landeserziehungsgeld, and is as follows:

  • For the first and second child €250 per month (€6,000 for 24 months)
  • As of the third child, €300 per month per child (€7,200 for 24 months)

The allowance is also available to parents who did not previously qualify for either Betreuungsgeld or Landeserziehungsgeld. It especially benefits low-income families with small children and families with several children.

The Zentrum Bayern Familie und Soziales (ZBFS, Bavarian Center for Family and Social Affairs) is your local authority for social services. The ZBFS website provides you all you need to know about the Bavarian family allowance.

Parents who have already applied for parental allowance in Bavaria receive family allowance automatically. Information for parents who have recently moved to Bavaria is available here.

The ZBFS has also set up a hotline for the family allowance. Experts are on hand to offer advice from Monday to Thursday between 8am and 4pm and on Friday from 8am to 12pm. Phone: +49 931 32090929

A daycare allowance known as Krippengeld has also been offered since January 1, 2020, in addition to the grant towards kindergarten fees. This allowance is available for parents whose children are in daycare from the child’s first birthday. It amounts to €100 per child towards daycare fees. The daycare allowance expires once the parents qualify for the grant towards kindergarten fees. The daycare allowance is only available to parents whose household income falls under a certain threshold. The daycare allowance is available to adoptive parents and foster parents as well as natural parents.

The ZBFS website provides you additional information about the Bavarian daycare allowance.

You can also contact the ZBFS daycare allowance hotline. Experts are on hand to offer advice from Monday to Thursday between 8am and 4pm and on Friday from 8am to 12pm. Phone: +49 931 32090929
